A transition event brings intention and direction to the next stage of a person's life.
A Bar-Bat Matzevah event marks a person's transition to the Elder stage of their life. In this stage their life is guided by the beacon they have created based on the earlier stages of their life.

Entrance to the Elder stage of life: the source verse of the Bar-Bat Matzevah event
בראשית ל"א מ"ה -- וַיִּקַּח יַעֲקֹב אָבֶן וַיְרִימֶהָ מַצֵּבָה
Genesis 31:45 -- "And Jacob took a stone, and raised it up as a monument (matzevah)."
Genesis 31:45 (for a person's life) -- "And a person took Aging, and raised it up as Eldering."
Aging is growing old, Eldering is choosing how to continue life.
Accepting the transition in my life
Bar-Bat Matzevah means transitioning from the long-time and well-familiar stage of Adult to the new and undeveloped stage of Elder. Even simply saying "Today I am an Elder" helps bring the realization that this change is happening. Doing acts that are part of the Elder stage have a strong impact on the person and are part of accepting the transition.
Speaking my Beacon
The beacon a person holds is the person's core definition of themself, the light that the person brings into the world and guides the person in the world. In preparation for the Bar-Bat Mitzvah a person defines their beacon, or more than one, in a process that may take several weeks. During "Speaking my Beacon" part of the Bar-Bat Matzevah the person openly says and expresses their beacon(s).
As examples, here are two beacons the author has developed to guide his life:
-
"To feel situations I'm in, and to bring my energies to make the situations richer for the people they touch".
-
"When Living and Dying dance a duet, what music will you play?"
The beacon is part of the person feeling their mission and purpose in their Elder stage.
Topics that are particularly important to the Bar-Bat Matzevah person:
Genesis 31:45 -- "And Jacob took a stone, and raised it up as a monument."
The Bar-Bat Matzevah person expresses aspects of the Bar-Bat Matzevah that are special to the person. Following is a list of possible topics that the person could speak about during the Event. As an example the topics selected to present in a particular Event are marked in blue in this list and described below. Press the tilde ~ at the beginning of each line for more information about that line:
~ A Stone -- connection with and presence of nature is part of being an Elder
~ Raised It Up As a Monument -- a person putting attention and energy in to make something happen
~ Monument/Beacon -- a person designing their life and setting guidance to live it, Tombstone becomes Lifestone
~ The Living~Dying Duet -- dealing with the larger presence of dying in our lives as we become an Elder
~ Changes in Balance -- changes in thinking, feeling, amount of activity, connections, and other things for an Elder
~ Connection with Other People -- despite their past disputes both Jacob and Laban wanted to connect
~ Epitaphing -- what is the effect on other people of raising the monument / passing interests and values to others
~ Action brings Intention -- the act of the stones/pile/monument came before and led to the peace they symbolized
~ Context/Surroundings -- use of words: "And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha; but Jacob called it Galeed"
~ Religion -- the source phrase of Bar Matzevah is taken from the Bible
~ Recognizing "noise" -- when is it worth taking something and putting effort into it, and when not?
~ more-- other thoughts / actions / feelings / initiatives the Bar-Bat Matzevah person takes from the verse
Raised it Up as a Monument
The Bar Matzevah Motion: a person putting attention and energy into creating or building something.
Genesis 31:45 -- "And Jacob took a stone, and raised it up as a monument."
The simple stone became a monument just by being raised, just by the flow of receiving attention and energy. In this way a Bar Matzevah brings Aging to become Eldering.
In my situation I have raised Dealing with Dementia up as a monument, with the mission to help people touched by dementia by raising Awareness and Conversation about dementia at every chance to speak or write about it. The result is in the "Media Links" section of TheAlzheimersConversation.com.
The Living~Dying Duet
Playing the Music of Life
When Living and Dying Dance a Duet
What Music Will You Play?
Dying Makes Living More Immediate
Living Makes Dying More Meaningful

with heartfelt thanks to Lori Rose Tupper
I continually feel the effects of my dementia in the dance between my enhanced emotions of living and the presence of my dying. In the everyday I often play lively music, and sometimes I play music that I'm hearing more often and more loudly. Having a Bar Matzevah helps me feel that both are present in me and are dancing together.
Epitaphing
A way of remembering a person / keeping them present by doing something they loved to do
or for a person to pass values and messages (such as the person's beacons) to others.
Epitaphing is a way of passing on what's important to a person, or of remembering a person by doing something that was important to that person. Epitaphing is a remembering / grieving activity of love and life. For example I do Epitaphing for my late bother, who was a gardener and loved plants, by gently stroking any particularly special flower that I go by.
My Bar Matzevah helps me make Epitaphing a part of my life, both to remember others and in what I leave. The Epitaphing that I'm now doing is to pay attention to situations in which I can say to or show someone else something that is particularly significant to me, and to express it to them very gently. I feel quite positive when these happen, both that I've had a chance to pass on something that I wanted to and that I did it in a way that is right for me.
Feeling release into the Elder stage of life: a new perspective
The Bar-Bat Matzevah person starts living as an Elder according to their beacon and the way they live their life. Having this intent and direction in their life is part of having a mission that can expand both the meaning and fulfillment of their life.
May the person have a beautiful Elder stage of life!
